Idea
The research and educational project "Living Tradition in South-Western Greater Poland" is devoted to current phenomena that originate from or draw on the culture of traditional rural communities.
Tradition is an intergenerational transmission. These are the values and principles of social life, norms and patterns of conduct, beliefs and ideas that are considered important by a given community and build its identity. In traditional culture, based on direct transmission, it was simply a way of life that was adopted from previous generations. Nowadays, maintaining its elements is associated with the recognition of the uniqueness of local heritage and the desire to protect it. Tapping into its potential becomes the basis for integration, self-identification, and a sense of group value. Tradition is therefore a factor in development.
What is the significance of traditional culture today, what elements of tradition are still alive and what functions do they perform? We seek answers to these and other questions by conducting ethnographic field research. We talk to people involved in cultivating the tradition and visit local events related to it. We would like to share the collected material and observations to show the richness and value of the cultural heritage of south - western Greater Poland.
The project includes museum workshops with artists involved in various branches of traditional culture, an educational competition, and an outdoor board exhibition, the aim of which is to disseminate knowledge about ancient rural life and its contemporary contexts.
