Nowe lotko in Bukówiec Górny
The custom of carrying nowe lotko around the village heralds the arrival of spring. The pine branch was decorated with colorful ribbons, gold and red suns, silver crescents, stars, beads, and chains. Children wandered from farm to farm, singing songs of good wishes meant to ensure prosperity in the households they visited, and begging for gifts.
As a child, I would take this nowe lotko ticket from morning to morning to visit neighbors, aunts, friends, and relatives. My sister and I would visit 10-12 houses. We would go until noon, and they would give us gifts of raw eggs, candy, and small coins. In the past, gifts were more modest; it was Lent, and we would bake light sweets for nowe lotko. In Bukówiec Górny, the custom is still celebrated today, and has been continued for years by, among others, the children from the "Nowe Lotko" group from Bukówiec Górny under the direction of Zofia Dragan. Dressed in regional costumes, the children were divided into small groups, each equipped with a handmade prop: nowe lotko made from a pine branch decorated with colorful tissue paper ribbons and a round yellow paper moon folded accordion-style, as well as a basket for offerings. They traveled from house to house, singing a traditional song when residents opened their doors:
May he be praised
Mrs. hostess, nowe lotko is in the hall
A green grove, a basket of eggs
In this house there is a stone which the farmer sits on.
A green grove, a basket of eggs
There is water in this house, the landlady is like a berry
A green grove, a basket of eggs
In this house here we have pinki, my host has beautiful sons
A green grove, a basket of eggs
There are so many chips in this house, my host has beautiful daughters
A green grove, a basket of eggs
In this house there are horses jumping over the apple trees
A green grove, a basket of eggs
In this house there are goats jumping over ropes
A green grove, a basket of eggs
In this house on the corner there is a bowl of cottage cheese
A green grove, a basket of eggs
If you want to watch it, you have to give something
A green grove, a basket of eggs
(after gifting)
We thank you for your hospitality and wish you health and happiness!
A green grove, a basket of eggs
At the end, the hosts thanked the guests for their visit and placed eggs, serving as traditional holiday gifts, and various sweets in the baskets. The collected gifts were then divided fairly among all the participants. Most residents eagerly await the children with nowe lotko. Often, these are people familiar with the tradition, having participated in it as children.
